Disability & mobility

Elevators first. Dam path second.

Science Park/West End is the Green Line stop the Museum of Science recommends. Two elevators connect the platform and the street. If they are out, there is no step-free way down, so check our live map before you ride past North Station.

Cross O’Brien Highway, then follow the path over the Charles River Dam. It’s a few minutes outside. The museum’s own accessibility page covers the building.

Best for a museum visit

At this stop, “accessible” only holds when both elevators are working. The highway crossing is outside either way.

If the Science Park elevators are out, North Station (Green and Orange Lines) may still work for you, but the route to the museum is much longer. Check before you go. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) elevator status: mbta.com/elevators.

What the trip actually feels like

Three steps: the elevator, the street crossings, the museum door.

  1. Green Line train arriving at Science Park

    01

Check the elevators before you board

The platform is above the street, and the only other way down is stairs. Check our live map before you board, while you can still change your route.

  2. Monsignor O’Brien Highway beside the Lechmere Viaduct, looking south

    02

Cross the highway, then the dam

The Museum of Science lists the route: cross the intersections at O’Brien Highway, then take the path across the drawbridge. It’s short, but all outside.

  3. Museum of Science building on the Charles River Dam, Boston

    03

    Inside, the museum takes over

Once you’re through the museum’s plaza entrance, its own elevators and loaner wheelchairs take over. Our map doesn’t cover those.

Why this stop feels like this

Named for the museum — built as a viaduct stop

Green Line train arriving at Science Park
  1. 1955Science Park opens on the viaduct
  2. MuseumMuseum of Science sits on the dam
  3. RebuildElevators become the promise
  4. TodayNo elevator, no trip

Science Park exists for museum trips. Whether you can make one depends on the elevators.

The stop sits on the Green Line so riders can reach the Museum of Science without a long route from North Station. That only works when street-to-platform elevators are running.

Before you board, decide where you’re heading (the museum or the dam path). If an elevator is out, change plans; don’t treat it as a small delay.

Before you go

Four things to check before you go.

  1. Check the map

Make sure the Science Park elevators are working before you ride past a station where you could still turn back.

  2. Pick where you’re going

The museum building or the dam path. Same station, different time outside.

  3. Keep North Station as a backup

If the elevators are out, North Station may still work, but the route to the museum is longer.

  4. Verify building access

The museum’s website covers its ramps and elevators. Our map covers the station elevators. Check both.
