Why this stop exists

Embarcadero · Ferry Building door

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) platform is deep underground. You need the elevator to get up to the Embarcadero sidewalk.

Disability & mobility

Elevators first. Ferry Building second.

Embarcadero is a deep downtown Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station. Elevators connect the platform and the street. If they are out, stairs are not a practical way to reach the Ferry Building.

A short trip outside once you reach the street. The Ferry Building’s website lists its drop-off and accessible restrooms. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) only gets you to the sidewalk.

Waterfront

Embarcadero promenade

Same station, but you spend your time outside along the waterfront. The paving is mostly flat. Expect wind and crowds of visitors.

Better for time outside by the water

At this stop, “accessible” only holds when the elevators are working.

If the Embarcadero elevators are out, Montgomery St. station may still work for you, but the distance outside to the Ferry Building changes. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) elevator status: bart.gov/stations/elevators.

What the trip actually feels like

Three steps: the elevator, the Embarcadero, the Ferry Building door.

Check the elevators before you board

The station is deep underground, and the only other way down is stairs. Check our live map before you board.

  2. Ferry Building and Embarcadero Plaza from above

    02

    Come up onto the Embarcadero

You come out on the waterfront sidewalk. If the elevators got you here, the Ferry Building is close.

  3. San Francisco waterfront and skyline

    03

The promenade is the outdoor option

Fresh air without spending the whole day at the market. It is all outside.

  3. ElevatorsNeeded to reach the deep platform
  4. TodayNo elevator, no trip

Embarcadero exists for Ferry Building trips. Whether you can make one depends on the elevators.

The stop sits under the Embarcadero so Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) riders can reach the Ferry Building without a long trip down Market Street. That only works when the elevators are running.

If an elevator is out, change plans; don’t treat it as a small delay. The waterfront is only close once the elevator has brought you up.

Before you go

Four things to check before you go.

  1. Check the map

Make sure the Embarcadero elevators are working before you ride downtown.

  2. Pick where you’re going

The Ferry Building or the promenade. Same station, different time outside.

  3. Keep Montgomery as a backup

If the elevators here are out, Montgomery St. station may still work, but the route outside to the waterfront changes.

  4. Verify building access

The Ferry Building’s website lists its drop-off and accessible restrooms. Our map covers the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station elevators. Check both.
