Why this stop exists

Montgomery · museum and Gardens doors

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) platform is deep underground. You need the elevator to get up to Market Street.

Disability & mobility

Elevators first. Museum second.

Montgomery St. is a deep downtown Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station. Elevators connect the platform and the street. If they are out, stairs are not a practical option, and the route to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) from Embarcadero is not short.

Yerba Buena Gardens and SFMOMA from the Metreon

Gardens

Yerba Buena Gardens

Same area near Mission Street, but you spend your time outside on the plaza. The paving is mostly flat. Expect events.

Better for time outside in the Gardens

At this stop, “accessible” only holds when the elevators are working. Inside, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) handles access.

If the Montgomery St. elevators are out, check our live map before you ride past Embarcadero. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) elevator status: bart.gov/stations/elevators.

What the trip actually feels like

Three steps: the elevator, Market Street, the museum door.

    01

Check the elevators before you board

The station is deep underground, and the only other way down is stairs. Check our live map before you board.

  2. Inside SFMOMA

    02

Come up near Market and Mission Streets

You come out on a downtown sidewalk. Decide early: the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) or Yerba Buena Gardens.

  3. Yerba Buena Gardens waterfall

    03

    Inside, the museum takes over

Elevators inside the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) are run by the museum, not by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART).

Montgomery St. exists for museum trips. Whether you can make one depends on the elevators.

The stop sits under Montgomery and Market Streets so Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) riders can reach the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and Yerba Buena Gardens without a long trip from Embarcadero.

Before you board, decide where you’re heading (the museum or the Gardens). If an elevator is out, the whole plan changes.

Nearby when the elevators work: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Yerba Buena Gardens. When they don’t: the route from Embarcadero is longer, so don’t count on it as an easy swap.

Before you go

Four things to check before you go.

  1. Check the map

Make sure the Montgomery St. elevators are working before you ride downtown.

  2. Pick where you’re going

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) or Yerba Buena Gardens. Same station, different time outside.

  3. Allow for crowds on Market Street

Downtown crowds are part of the route.

  4. Verify building access

The museum’s website covers its elevators. Our map covers the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station elevators. Check both.
